Baby New Year is Here

Oh thank heavens that year is over. 2003 wassa no good to me, not to mention the country, and the families of those who gave their lives so our unelected President could settle a fatherly score. Tell me why we went to war in Iraq when it was Osama’s head we really wanted? Wouldn’t that have helped us American’s rest easily with the sense of just revenge? So we fought a randomly picked war, we won, and we’re still fighting it. I’m no world events commentator, but a few things seem self-evident even to me.

And all I’m saying is, it’s rather difficult to enjoy the “end of the year” celebration when, for so many others, there’s just not much to celebrate.

Who is Bush to put the harsh on my party? And anyway, I, for one, have bid adieu to the rigors of 2003 long ago. I just couldn’t take it anymore. I’ve been gorging on fantasies of better days, how successful I’ll be, how loved I’ll be, and gosh darnnit, how good and worthy I am. Somewhere in the middle of this willful denial, I walked through a door and into my fantasies for real. So maybe there is a god. So maybe those hackneyed sayings are really pearls of wisdom aferall. “Quitters never win.” “Fake it till ya make it.” That kind of crap and other, more profound quips I can’t seem to dust off at the moment.

2003 - you were not so good to me. Perhaps in your need to be liked, you turned my fate around, at the last freaking minute, and handed me a few blessings to be grateful for. I smote you for months, and then you commanded my attention by way of unforseen good fortune. So we’ll call it even, you devil temptress of a year.

And now, 2004, I challenge you to take away from me what was so hard to win over. I’ve got a new career path, much like the old one, only now with greater purpose and confidence. I’ve got a new love, not at all like any old loves I’ve ever had. And I will defend and protect these states at all stops. Be kind, 2004, and show yourself to be fair and decent, as all even numbered years should be!
